Experience
A decade of process development, increasingly through models.
- 2025 — Present
Director
Merck & Co., Inc. · DSCS Digital — Process Modeling & Analytics
Leads the Process Modeling & Analytics function within Digital Sciences, Commercialization & Supply.
- 2023 — 2025
Principal Scientist
Merck & Co., Inc. · PR&D Data-Rich Experimentation
- Team leadership: Led a diverse team delivering new technology and expert support to a complex pipeline, driving meaningful coaching and employee development to maximize personal, career, and business fulfillment. Coached a larger group of scientists across the organization as the Data-Rich Experimentation (DRE) scientific lead and leadership-team member.
- AI for pharma: Championed the development and deployment of transformative digital capabilities, including algorithmic process optimization and Neural ODE hybrid models. Grew uptake of AI tools to ~100 end users across PR&D and 10+ pipeline programs in under two years, realizing substantial gains in experiment reduction alongside enhanced process quality and productivity.
- Digital transformation: Led five cross-divisional technical teams, including a network of IT stakeholders, to pioneer a modern, digitally enabled research organization. Delivered three accelerated use cases and continues to mature additional in-silico platforms spanning cell-culture and chromatography modeling, systems biology and omics, solubility and morphology prediction, and protein engineering.
- 2019 — 2023
Senior Scientist — Associate Principal Scientist
Merck & Co., Inc. · PR&D Data-Rich Experimentation
- Data science: Drove impactful process-optimization and development decisions from laboratory data across multiple modalities using mechanistic and machine-learning analyses. Regularly upskilled the department as a subject-matter expert. Developed and deployed enabling tools to solve pipeline challenges (enzyme-cascade analyses, Monte Carlo control strategy, dynamic RSM, nitrosamine kinetic models, end-user Bayesian optimization, and more).
- High-throughput experimentation: Developed and deployed new automation, intensification, and parallelization technologies for efficient process development. Delivered key milestones for route scouting, process development, characterization, piloting, and tech transfer across a wide variety of small-molecule assets using data-rich techniques.
- External science: Represented Merck's strategic interests while advancing the field through academic collaborations and pre-competitive industry consortia. Served as DRE team lead for new-collaboration proposal review and development, and individually contributed to multiple external engagements leading to frequent co-authored publications.
- 2015 — 2019
Associate Scientist — Scientist
Merck & Co., Inc. · Chemical Engineering Research & Development
- Reaction engineering: Consulted on particularly challenging chemical syntheses — flow chemistry, photochemistry, electrochemistry, and biocatalysis — through lab and modeling work. Served as lead engineer for the first kilogram-scale electrochemistry demonstrations, overseeing equipment design and scale-up strategy.
- Commercialization: Technical lead for PPQ process validation, including tech transfer to an international supply site. Leveraged modern data-rich experimentation and process analytical technology to enrich late-stage development, and authored related sections for the NDA filing. Completed a rotation as a process engineer in the small-molecule pilot plant.
